note to all! all tires are filled with nitrogen from the factory, because of the TPMS will then not rust and fail. Also, nitrogen filled tires are less probole of leaking and pressure not going to change with temperature. Sometimes these vehicles are known to sit for long times before being shipped (recalls, part shortages). Remember oxygen has water in it....

Pressure does change with temp. Just not as bad as regular air. I filled Aircraft tires with pure nitrogen in Qatar (123 degrees) to 100 lbs. Landed in Greenland (50 degrees), tires were low. Did not air up, Landed in OKC (80) and tires looked fine. Absolutely no reason to pay for nitrogen.

Ideal gas law: P*V = n*R*T, the gas constant in this case is universal, the number of moles of gas is constant if you don't leak or add, and the volume is pretty constant. Air, nitrogen, whatever will change pressure the exact same way with temperature.

Nitrogen is usually dry, the compressed air usually isn't, so the moisture issue is somewhat real, but about 25 to 30% of the gas in the tire is likely to be air regardless, as there is no good way to get air out before pressurizing the tire. You could fill and purge several times to reduce this.

The only time air will change more with temp will be when it has a lot of water in it, and the temperature is low enough to condense it out and freeze it. However, the amount of water vapor in the tire will be normally a very small part of the total amount of gas, so this won't make much difference.

Nitrogen doesn't leak slower than air, it is 4/5 of air, and pretty much the lightest major component. If any difference, it would leak faster. It might slow tire rot from the inside a bit, but that is rarely why you need new tires. There is no significant benefit to normal people for nitrogen filled tires. It won't hurt, but it is not value added, really.

The dealer for my Escalade put nitrogen in the tires (and I had them remove the charge on the sale) and I can't say I saw a lick of difference when cold weather hit. All tires still lost PSI when it got cold. Why? Because it's never pure nitrogen in there. Unless the dealer has a way to evacuate all ambient air from the tire cavity while on the rim (and not unseat the tire from the rim- impossible given the rigidity of the tire material), there will never be just pure Nitrogen inside the tire. Regular air will be left inside and mix with the N gas, defeating any theoretical benefit. I don't see car dealers being equipped with the equipment to do a 100% vacuum evacuation on tires and then adding N gas.
good point, never thought of it like that

"Oxygen has water in it"... Huh? So Oxygen, O2, has water, H2O, in it. I'm getting a nosebleed just thinking how that makes sense to you.
