I ordered a couple of aluminum mounts for the BYOD rail so I could mount my iPhone and take video. Looks like I need to work on stability. The rail and mounts look great at least 😃

It looks fine in Timelapse mode, but the second half of this video shows how shaky it is with real time video

I’ve noticed in the forums that the BYOD rail is supposed to ship with double-sided tape on each end but mine didn’t have it. I’m going to add that and see if it helps with some of the rail rolling/twisting that I’m seeing. From what I can see so far, the center screw mount in the dashboard also has some give which is causing the rail to rotate.

How old is your iPhone? I know some of the older iPhones don’t have great stability control.

GoPro has great software and built in sensors that really prevent this.

It’s an 11. I also have an older GoPro that I figure probably won’t be much better. I’ll start with physical stability then go from there.

Aren't they on like iPhone 27 now? Did you get your iPhone in the 90s? Just messing with you.

Could it be your mount and not the rail? How secure is that mount while using the phone?

A gimbal mount might help as well. That would smooth out some of the movement of the camera..

You phone is pretty far away from the rail. Asking both the rail and phone mount to be pretty rigid, which they aren’t. I had the same issue until I mounted the phone closer.

I think there needs to be a more secure way to mount these rails. Ford left only one center attachment point, and the width of these rails on the market really necessitate at least 3 points of contact.

The weight of most devices attached at the ends, sticky-tape not withstanding, is going to flop around over bumps.

Went with the more centralized small mounting rail being sold to avoid this issue.

It was my understanding that @EIGHTLUG had plans to design a replacement mounting point for the dash that would be "bomb proof", but I am not sure where he is with that project or if it is still on his list. Interested as well.

Yeah, it had a name like Beefy Onboard Optical Balance System or something IIRC.

What's stopping me is that our panel has the center channel speaker in it. Our original 3D scan was of a model without the speaker. I'll need to either A) Find a local Bronco without the speaker to R&D from or B) Get the part number for that panel and order one from Ford for R&D.

With all of the other projects that are in flight and the immense bottle neck of manufacturing, because of the way the world is right now, this one may take a while to bubble to the top.

All of that being said, I'll mount my phone (iPhone 12 Pro Max) on the dash and make a video of my drive from the house to the shop. Because of al of the rail fit-ups that I do, my feet aren't 3M VHB taped to the dash either. From what I saw in my 1,300 mile drive from LA to the house, it was rock solid. That was also a rail that wasn't taped down. We shall see what happens...
