Hi everyone, I plan on purchasing and installing exterior lights (Rigid) for my Bronco in the near future. Taking advantage of my AUX switches, when connecting the lights to the AUX wires, I was thinking of using this kit from Amazon:

200-Piece Kuject Solder Seal Wire Connector Kit

Is that overkill or should I just connect the wires and wrap in electrical tape? :)

Thank you in advance!

I have a set of those things and only used them once. When using a heat gun I had a hard time getting the solder to melt.

I would rather twist the wires together long-ways, solder with an iron, and heat shrink.

I have these. I use them along with heat shrink tubing over the top of them. I used the reflector attachment on my heat gun to get the solder to melt. If you only twist the wires and wrap the splices with electrical tape you are looking for problems down the road because the wires could become corroded or they could come loose. You could alos skip the butt connectors and do what @jhenson81 suggested where you splice the wires, apply solder and then heat shrink tubing to cover the splice.

I use those all of the time. They work great. Used them for all of the aux wiring so far. I'll also put heat shrink over the top for added protection.

The key is a small directed heat source.

I use this Dremel one but others could work. https://www.dremel.com/us/en/p/2000-01-f0132000aa

I used these from McMaster for my ditch lights and fog lights. You crimp the wire in, heat up the heat-shrink to seal it to the wire, and then you can plug/unplug them with any connections as needed. Granted, these are more expensive because they're from McMaster, but you might be able to find similar options elsewhere.

16-14 AWG Male https://www.mcmaster.com/72625K76/
16-14 AWG Female https://www.mcmaster.com/72625K77/
22-18 AWG Male https://www.mcmaster.com/72625K74/
22-18 AWG Female https://www.mcmaster.com/72625K75/

Also, the sizes are interchangeable so you can plug a 16-14 AWG Male terminal into a 22-18 AWG Female terminal for example.

Ok that is perfect, I'm going to order those. Seems easier especially since I had concerns that in the future I could be swapping out lights (if they die). The weather in South Florida can be a little brutal during the summer months.

I went with Deutsch connectors since they are standard, waterproof, and easy to use. I used weather-seal heat shrink wire covers and butt splicers, and really like and recommend the mesh harness cover. It's all 16ga wiring, and the heat seal shrinks were a variety pack.

I can easily unplug the 500s (and my Cube foglights) and every connection is weatherproofed.

Those are not weather proof so there's a chance of corrosion, especially in coastal areas.

I put Weather Pak connectors on all of my Aux wires so you can easily switch them out if you want to plug and play something else.

They're a very tight fit and the ends shrink to the wire so I don't think anything can get in, but if they're going to remain unplugged this could be a valid concern.

I had considered this as I have Weatherpaks but they are so bulky I don't like using them anymore.

I use those, and I solder with wire.

those can be a PIA to get the solder to melt and if in some weird spot. It sucks, easier to solder the normal way.

that being said. Solder the connection Not matter which direction you choose to go, heat shrink and make the water proof as much as you can.
