My sister-in-law just messaged me last night that when she started her Bronco, and turned the heat on, her windshield cracked 😬. Just wondering if there’s reports of this yet?

It was 28 degrees in MI last night. Her Bronco was a 12/2021 build, 1/2022 delivery.

She probably had a chip that she didnt know about and the defroster just made it worst.

As said above, she almost certainly had a small rock chip in the nearly vertical windshield that was the root cause.

The way windshields are installed (basically resting on a bed of butyl rubber glue) means they are under very little ā€œstressā€ so stress cracks just appearing is almost unheard of.

the cold outside air combined with warm defrost air inside caused different rates of expansion and resulted in the crack. Go outside and look closely and you’ll probably find it.

You can also do the ā€œballpoint pen testā€ by running a ballpoint pen along the length of the crack and it will usually stop or drag when the ball finds the original impact point.

Has anyone heard if the hood deflector actually helps with protecting the windshield? Been debating buying it; but I'm not crazy about how it looks. I'd 100% buy it if someone smarter than me (there are a lot of you out there) explained the science behind how it will prevent chips in my windshield.

I have learned with my wrangler that windshields with little angle are prone to stone chips-cracks. Rocks just dont deflect as well as a nice sloping windshield. Pay a few extra $$ and add windshield coverage. The Bronco window seems to have more slope than my wrangler but it's still not much....so I added coverage to that too.
just a couple weeks ago I had to replace the windshield on my Jeep after a stone chip/crack. An extra $13 in my insurance saved me over $500 for the cost of replacement. My wrangler was the third one there getting window replaced the day I was there.

Got the exact same crack in the exact same spot this morning. It was 10 degrees in CO this morning, turned the defroster on, watched the crack happen. Looks to have started under the wiper blade. Seems to be too long to repair

Ford needs to have a gorilla glass option like jeep does now. With these windshields being so straight up and down they get peppered easily and readily by sand, gravel, etc.

I remember reading somewhere here that the hood deflector has seriously reduced the garbage that hits the windshield.

Agreed! There’s this Exoshield film I’m considering too…

Same exact thing happened to a Bronco during a Moab Bronco off roadeo event I was at last weekend.
It was 20 degrees that morning.

This is my window after about 150 miles of sanded interstate driving in a snow storm. The whole window is trashed. I’m 49 years old and had many vehicles and never have I seen this before. That is not dirt on the windshield, it’s pit from sand. I have four cracks all happening in a three hour drive. I am so pissed. Also, my window regulator broke on the same trip when I opened the door and the window was frozen to the seals. The indexing of the windows when opening a door is stupid. Basically you can’t drive these vehicles in freezing weather. I just paid $53000 for a fair weather mall crawler I guess
