For those interested, I just found out today that the reason I haven't seen the dupli-color paint to match Velocity Blue in any of the auto parts stores. The reason is that it is a tri stage paint, which sucks for future paint work. It has a colored base, a second coat of a tinted clear, then the final clear on top. Just makes doing paint work a bigger pain when repairing or matching pieces, etc...

I went to my local paint pros that mix anything and can make aerosols, etc... he said it would be about $50 just for the materials and then about the same to mix it up and get the base and mid coat mixed up. Just buying a touch up pen at the auto parts store is $16 now. I'm amazed at the increase in prices over the nearly 30 years driving. I remember batteries being $50 not that long ago, and paint touch up pens for $5 at Walmart.

so if you've been looking for a match to Velocity Blue E7, you have to look online for a kit, or hit your local paint supply shop.

Tri-coat paint is nothing new. Not a big deal to color match and blend. If a painter is afraid of tri-coat they shouldn't be painting. Just about every automaker has tri-coat finishes in their product lines.

Agreed that a professional shop should be able to do good quality tri coat paintwork. Just more for the DIY'er that isn't aware of the three stages of this particular color. The link provided by vigor does not necessarily get you the products that you need, they only note a 2 coat system. So the match may be a big compromise and not work depending on what type of panel you are painting. for those that might have been looking for the dupli-color match which doesn't exist.

I found this out the hard way when a rolls royce hit my '20 Tremor in VB. Bodyshop called me and said they had to special order the paint and it took over a week to get.

That was in response to the costs of thing today versus a few years back. Like the paint pens in the OP post.

Ah, gotcha. I was wondering why you had just posted a list of parts and prices in a thread about VB paint. (y)

I couldnt bring myself to comment anything on negativity about a proper blue on a ford.

So you are saying it's going to be a pain for me to match the paint for my Bronco lettering and the tow hooks. Just great....

Im considering painting the same parts and this is a recent fear I've had. I thought about how hard the rapid red may to match good without paying too much. VB, CO, rapid. All going to be harder to match if body work is done. The results may be pretty obviously unmatched in certain lights.

That is one reason I am going with A51 over VB. I really like VB and like it more but it will cost more to redo/fix and is not as DIY for any replacement panels. VB is a metallic and you have to watch how you do that or you get a stripe effect. Granted a good body shop should not have an issue but I dont want the hassle. Now if it was a non metallic I might go with it.

Automotive battery prices have gotten ridiculous. Try Costco. (I'm typically not a fan of paying a yearly fee to shop somewhere, but my wife is a teacher, and got a discounted membership.) Last month I bought a new Interstate battery there for $85. Auto parts stores were wanting near double that.

The only past experience I have was with cougars from 99-00. They had a tri stage red color and whenever a panel was painted without blending properly into the adjacent panels, you could almost always tell a slight difference due to slightly different environmental factors from factory booth to a random booth in a random part of the country on a random temp/humidity combo.

My solution for tow hooks, moldings, etc. would be to find as close as possible a single stage metallic paint then clear (traditional 2 stage even with metallics) from a place you can at least bring a cap out to the truck and just go that route. I fully plan to keep my truck out of the paint shop since this will be a weekend vehicle only, but after 10 years my last Ram was entirely repainted and had half new body panels due to one at fault and one not at fault accident, so I know that sometimes things happen. just an extra kick in the balls every time you come out and see the color difference between panels which can drive you mad.
