If a driver is coming from a AWD to selectable 4WD there's a learning curve to when you need to engage. I've been driving long enough to have experienced selectable with locking hubs, selectable without locking hubs, full time 4WD as used on a generation of square body Chevies, pushbuttons and levers, Land Rover AWD with terrain response, reading the manual and asking if you have questions is a good idea before you break something.
If you find that you engaged 4WD and it won't disengage because your driveline is bound up from excess force, you can usually release the stress by backing up and unwinding it. Probably not an issue with the Bronco depending on how the transfer case engages the front axle but the tip ias there if needed.
I once worked with a lady who had purchased a 4WD SUV (Isuzu Trooper) and on the first snowy day found it wouldn't go through the snow despite putting it in 4WD. She asked me what the problem was, I took a look at her rig and locked her hubs. It worked brilliantly until her husband told her the salesman told him to not lock the hubs....what he meant was not leave the hubs locked all summer but nope can't lock those ever! Umm, so why put them on a SUV if you aren't supposed to engage them? College educated the both of them.
