just get some of those lock nuts, I don't think it's a big issue. Somebody really wants one of your wheels they can take any of the other 4 pretty quickly too.
Spare on my Tacoma hangs somewhere under the truck bed, anyone could take that off easily too, don't think that's really a 'thing'. And that one doesn't even have the fancy lock nuts I have on the other 4, it just hangs down there somehow.
Back about 1999, had mine taken off a GMC pickup while I was in class one night. Security guard on campus at there with orange light flashing so they wouldn’t get hit in the parking lot while under the truck.

He never looked to see if the truck had a flat.

It can be done.

I had all 5 wheels stolen off a Jeep about 15 years ago. Broad daylight, nice sunny afternoon, while the wife and I were at the movies. They were aftermarket wheels, but nothing special and the tires were OK, not new, but lots of life left.

As for wheel locks, they’re a waste of time. Couldn’t find my key for the locks on my truck one day I had a flat. I spent longer looking for the key than it took to improvise a solution to remove the locking nut.

Wheel theft has been a big thing lately nation-wide. Seeing lots of reports of it in various auto groups. It’s common especially amongst aftermarket wheels for trucks/Jeeps/4x4’s, Teslas and BMWs, Porsches. I would say wheel theft is probably third in terms of vehicle parts theft these days, behind catalytic converters, off-road lights and accessories, then wheels...

Last thing I had stolen was the hub caps off a 2012 Expedition. Someone popped the little buggers off of there while I was grabbing lunch. Ford wanted $115 each to replace, insurance was a $500 deductible, found them on eBay for about $60 each give or take from a couple sellers since no one had 4. And just under a month before trading it in for my 2018 Expy.

Is this really a thing in the states?

I’ve never heard of anyone getting a spare tire stolen up here.

As an old worn out LEO I will say that if a crook wants your spare tire. he'll take it. Lug keys to the locking lugs are very easy to come by, and if they are a wheel thief they'll have them all. Don't worry about it, as Ace @AcesandEights said, it doesn't seem to be a wide spread problem. During my entire career I never got a call for a stolen Jeep spare tire.
Make sure they're 37"s.

Every single pickup I ever owned where I didn’t lock the spare- spare was stolen.

had wheels rotated at Ford once and they never put the steel cable back on- and yes, it got stolen. Spare theft is a thing. Lock your shit up and do your part To reduc crime

I would worry more about the catalytic converter being stolen.

But since the spare already has a camera, how about hacking it or adding a ring doorbell? And using the 4G built into the vehicle you could scare the crap out of anyone that touches the spare.

Or mount a donut in place of the full size, nobody but nobody is going to steal one of those.

Laugh all you want but it fricken sucks when you walk out to your ride, notice something is off, and then realize some jacknut stole your spare. Happened to me on my 2014 Jeep JK while working at a hospital in the the nicer part of town. They drove through the parking lot in the middle of the day, stole every single Jeep spare tire (5 of them) and were gone before anyone noticed. Battery powered impact and a pickup truck were all the tools they needed. Cost me $850 to replace it.

I'll have to keep this in mind when I need new tires. 🤔 But I don't want Goodyears, so now I need to convince 5 Bronco owners to get the same exact 35" Nittos. 🤣
