Been to 2 off-road parks so far and had a great time. But it had me thinking: say for instance I run into a tree, or drag a boulder down the side and cause major damage while out on a trail… would I be covered by my insurance?

So I called my agent and was told they hadn’t been asked before and would check with an underwriter. Few mins later they called back and said rather cryptically “while you are not explicitly covered for off-road use, you are not excluded either”. They did however tell me if I was involved in a race or competition at time of damage, that is excluded (which I kind of figured anyway).

So now I am doubting my coverage and wondering what others out there may have found or perhaps even had experience filing a claim. I did some google searches but nothing really definitive when it comes to off-road vehicle coverage (lots of info for quads,SxS, dirt bikes, etc).

I’d probably even be willing to pay for a separate policy rider, or short term coverage for the duration of a weekend at a time since it is not often I am out.

Thoughts?

Hit a tree on a trail or in a parking lot it should be a comprehensive claim without issue.

A man bought a box of expensive cigars, then insured them against fire. After smoking all the cigars, he filed a claim against the insurance company, claiming that the cigars had been destroyed "in a series of small fires". A judge concluded that, on the wording of the policy, the insurance company was liable.

The company paid the claim, but the man was arrested and convicted on 24 counts of arson.

I thought anything that happened in the woods was reported to the insurance as I hit a deer or I avoided hitting a deer? 🤷‍♂️

"I was driving down the road to my deer camp when I hit the object"
