I still had to trim the top of the front flaps, but I did not cut a hole.
Removed left and right steps without removing the bracket. They are identical on top.
Installed the mudflaps.
Put the left step on the right side, right step on the left side. Slid steps until they barely touched the mudflaps.
Marked holes on brackets with a sharpie.
Drilled holes, installled M6 nutserts.
Reinstalled swapped steps with OE bolts.
The steps are now back about 1/2" from stock - but actually centered properly in the wheelbase.
