Crazy. I sat in a 7spd BL last weekend and throught the shifting was incredibly smooth. I'm comparing it to a JL tho. I thought it was a very small tad on the spongy side, but super smooth. The clutch wasn't soft, but it was pretty easy IMO, especially if it's going to be available on a 400tq motor.

It was almost like he was finding neutral before he shifted into another gear. 🤷‍♂️ Maybe he’s used to European exotics? I know I’m going to have to remap the gear locations in my head. Only ever had a 5-speed. My fear is throwing it into reverse, thinking it’s 1st. 😳
There's a lock-out collar that you have to lift up on to get it left of 1-2. You will never accidentally downshift it into reverse from anything but C.

I think it's going to be more disorienting to use crawl when wheeling. Shifting all the way left and down from a stand still is not going to come natural to me. It's going to be like starting in second.
Interesting. Me being super new and inexperienced with MTs, I might have an easier time getting used to the Bronco. I won't have other shift patterns to unlearn!

Well, At least that's what I'm gonna tell myself in between stalls.

You can't watch a TV with the power off. You can't test a manual transmission without actually driving it. Only the throw distance remains constant. It's basically the same as a Jeep.

Thats fine. It’s not for everyone. I wouldn’t be getting a Bronco at all if the MT wasn’t a choice.
I would definitely not be as excited. To me an auto is a pain to drive, a manual is fluid second nature.

Can’t say what this 7 speed is like until I get my hands on one, but it seems all the newer manuals I’ve played with, including the 2 I own, make it so you’d have to screw up pretty badly to shift into reverse instead of 1st. Like our MINI is a 6-speed and R is top left with nothing below, Then 1 is to the right of R with 2 below 1. It’s easy to know when you’re shifting into R or not because it has a different entry point and angle than 1st.

That said, our Bronco will be the 10-speed auto on the 2.7. I have the 10-speed in my Expedition and it’s been great. As fun as shifting can be at times, I won’t miss it in stop and go traffic and the 10 auto just has too many other advantages that come with it.

Ironically, the longer the trip, the less shifting is needed (per mile, per minute/hour, etc). So a manual transmission is more problematic (if it is at all) on short trips, not long.

I played with shifter and clutch today at dealer event, and came away with positive impression.
The manual feels much less 'clunky' than my Sahara, and the throws and shifter are both much shorter than the Jeep. The clutch was fine, nothing unusually good or bad about it.

I grew up driving manuals. My Dad (RiP) would never buy an auto. I learned to drive in a classic 70s Land Cruiser and we also had a 70s era Ford F-150. My first off-road vehicles were also manual (Pathfinder and 4Runner). But I will never buy another manual for off-road. As someone else said, it’s not a sports car and that is where a manual is best suited.

Off-roading requires more subtle power application to the wheels that is easiest to achieve with an auto. You can use a manual of course, as I did for many years, but it requires a lot more finesse riding the clutch and can put a lot more wear on the clutch.

I’m not saying a manual isn’t as capable, but it’s just just WAY easier to do hardcore off-roading with an auto in my experience. And that’s not even considering some of the very innovative and useful trail drivetrain features that can only be had with an auto.

Of course, YMMV.

Kind of a side note, but thought it was interesting

This is a reply to my question from a guy who just went to the Off Roadeo

What are your impressions of driving the stick? And the 2.3?

Matt Jeeps
It’s fantastic first gear feels a little sluggish but watching the boost gauge the tuning only allows for about 5 pounds of boost with a little tuning upping that to 10 in first gear is going to feel like a monster second gear allows you for 10+ psi in third gear you’re touching the 14 pounds mark. Anything after first is crazy powerful.
