I agree with everyone else. If you are going squatch and stuck with an auto, go 2.7. It is a fantastic engine.
If it's a budget thing, do the 2.3. BUT, if you ever plan to sell your Bronco, do the smart thing and get the 2.7... it will be the better choice overall, because you will get: *immediate gratification, better/smoother power, *the 2.7 injection will run cleaner, and *there will probably only be a penalty of +/- 1mpg.
Additionally, most people won't keep their Bronco for 50-years, so there is long-term value to consider: The option cost about $2k, so, 1) after 3-5 years, it will likely still be worth about $2k more than the 2.3 to the next buyer; 2) after 10 years it will still be worth about $1.5k more than the 2.3; and 3) after as many years as it might ever matter, it will still be worth about $1k more than the 2.3.

Less about the motor than the gearing for the bigger tires. I ran 35’s on a 2000 Taco, ~150hp, re-geared it was great.

The 2.3 is going to be overworked in this rig . Just get the 2.7 and enjoy what the Bronco has to offer

How will the 2.3 be overworked with 35 inch tires? Its the same engine found on the ranger.

The Bronco is pushing close to 5,000 pounds that’s a lot of weight for that 2.3 to lug around . The stress and strain on that motor is not worth the savings up from IMO

my volvo xc60 is about 4000lbs with a 2.0 turbo pushing 250hp. it's not sluggish and doesn't get over worked. even with a full car. the bronco is estimated at 4500lbs max (don't know where you are getting 5000lbs from). with a slightly larger wheels you'll see a difference but it's not a drag racer. if you want something fast with power, get a mustang.

Overstressing and wearing out motors is not really a thing today. Motors wore out in the old days due to inferior rings, cylinders, bearing materials, and subpar oils compared to today. The 2.3 will push 35's for several hundreds of thousands of miles. Poor maintenance will be the main reason people will have premature problems.

I own a Explorer with the 2.3L it does fine hauling around the Explorer which is probably about the same weight as the Bronc. However our 17 doesn’t have the 10 spd, so with that factored in I think it will be a fine engine choice. But I am going with the 2.7...I have several friends with that engine in their F150 and they love it.
2.3 overworked? The the 3.6 In the Jeep is dying then. All the 2.3 needs to take it to the level of the 2.7 is literally just the simple 93 Octane tune. It will give you the same power of the 2.7 for less money.
Honestly I don't get why Ford even puts the 87 Octane tune on it from the factory. Most likely so they can sell their tuner. Or for people who want to save money at the pump I guess.
If i go with the 2.3 im getting the Ford performance tune ASAP. More then enough power. Around 325hp and 375tq.
You might want to research what early generation V8s made for power. A lot of those engines are rebuilt and still running today. Plenty of them made waaay less power then the 2.3 and didn't have the capability to tune for more power. You got what you got with them and a lot if them where placed in vehicle's that weighed even more then the Bronco.
