Deciding on Tires for Black Diamond.

Hey all, I'm (hopefully) taking delivery of my Black Diamond in Feb/Mar and I'm wanting to put a 1" leveling kit and new 33" (285/70R17) tires at the dealership before taking delivery. I'm trying to decide between the Mickey Thompson Baja Boss M/T and the Falken Wildpeak M/T01s. Do any of you have experience with either or both of these tires? Which do you think had the quieter ride (I get both will be noisier than ATs)? And finally, are either of these particularly better than the other in snow?

Or, should I be looking at another tire altogether?

I used both tires before for various applications. They obviously both mud-terrains, and therefore fairly loud on the road. The Wildpeak M/T are definitely on the quieter side when it comes to mud-terrain tires... but its still ultimately a mud-terrain tire.

I've used both down in Arizona/southern Utah... so lots of dirt and sand but admittedly not a whole lot of mud or snow. But conventional wisdom for mud-terrains is they will be fine for deeper snow with slightly warmer conditions, but not that great for light snow or ice on the street/hard-packed dirt, or in situations where it gets really cold.

If you do want something that is really good in the snow but also has mud-terrain tire characteristics, you're probably going to have to look at "beefier" All-Terrains.

Some of my favorite all-terrains:

• BFGoodrich KO2
• Falken Wildpeak A/T3W
• Milestar Patagonia X/T
  • Milestar also has a new tire called the "Patagonia A/T Pro" coming in 2022 that I'm keeping my eye on. Looks promising.

All three of those tires have a 3PMSF rating (highest snow-rating available), and I believe I read that the new Patagonia A/T Pros will also have a 3PMSF rating. So I would expect all three of those to do fantastic in the snow.

Nitto Ridge Grapplers may also be worth looking at. They don't have the 3PMSF rating, and I personally haven't used them, but people on the internet seem to love them, and my brother up in Washington state says they are fantastic in both the mud and the snow.

Personally I'll be going with the BFG KO2 since they come standard on the Badlands trim. After that I'll see what prices look like, but I may give a set of Nittos a try.

Yeah, we've basically been putting Falkens on everything we own. AT3's on my, now sold, Wrangler TJ and on our '99 lifted Astro Van (lol). Also have whatever Falkens All-Season car tires on the gf's Focus. The AT3's are great in the snow, but not as great in mud. I've just been thinking of getting a more aggressive mud terrain and I've never put any on my 4x4s. Always had either BFGs or, more lately, the Falkens.

Might also look at the Mickey Thompson Baja ATZ P3 as a so-called hybrid AT/MT tire, similar to the Grapplers, supposedly.

Have used the BFGs for years in Colorado. Great in snow, off-road and fairly quiet on pavement.
