I installed a dash cam and plugged it into the center console 12v. After shutting the car off, the camera stays on for at least 45 minutes, I fear this might kill the battery over time.

many one know how to prevent the 12v in the center from staying on after the car is off?

Most of us like one plug that stays on for a while. Great for charging...

I cannot even imagine why you went through the pain of routing to the center console when you had the fuse box at the left of the steering wheel, but indeed, the power plugs (in console and in back) have a timeout feature.

Some dash cams also have battery monitoring capability to shut down when battery condition is low, but those may need to use an OBD piggyback harness (mine has that - it is the Ford one they OEM'd from Thinkware)

Most American cars have the 12V cigar lighter port continuously powered. It's just the design used for decades. My German cars however, power off the 12V port on ignition shutoff. Interestingly though, the two German cars I have that were built in the USA, have continuously-powered 12V ports.

Crazy idea for the OP. Just unplug the camera?
