I run my Outer Banks off road a lot and get it really muddy. I was using a pressure washer to clean dirt from running board and I knocked off a piece of the covering!

That was a defect in the paint. If you hadn't knocked it off with the pressure washer it would have eventually come off after rust bubbled up underneath it (assuming it's steel), or it just got loose enough to flake off on it's own. Just wire brush it clean to make sure you got all the blister up, make sure the surface is clean and dry, and touch it up with a bit of spray paint.

Also, don't ever use the red nozzle unless you are wanting to drill holes in something. Not saying you did, this was a paint defect, but just good advice.
