Granger’s finance department emailed me with the following request.

“I am emailing you to confirm a few things regarding your registration.As you know, we collected your sales tax, and will have an in-transit title mailed to your county. We will need you to please confirm the following information with your place of registration:

1. Address to send the check and in-transit title to
2. Who to make the check payable to
3. Sales Tax: 7.25%

Once you have this information, please just respond to this email providing that. Once I have that I will get the accurate information sent out to your counties to complete your registration.”

I’m registering the car in California (live in LA County). Going to look at the DMV site but any guidance on what info to send to Granger would be appreciated.

I just got the same. I sent the response below back:

Everything I could find said payment is tagged to the registration of a vehicle. I am not sure CA DMV is structured to hold payment of a vehicle without doing the registration at the same time. Granted, this was public facing information and not industry. When I bought my Tremor from you guys last October, I had to present the vehicle with the transit tag, weight certificate, and smog check to complete the registration. At that point I paid with a check. If you send me the check addressed to the DMV, I can pay with the check when I register the vehicle.

I plan on registering at the Woodland DMV since they tend to have short lines and good service: 825 East St #306, Woodland, CA 95776. However, to my understanding, all DMV checks are processed at a central location.

I have always paid to: Department of Motor Vehicles.

Assuming they calculated the taxes correctly, they should just send the checks to the peeps in CA and we can hand the check over when we register. I don't believe the DMV system can hold money unattached from a registration.

Also a little worried if they are calculating all counties and cities at 7.25%. I know some areas tack on additional taxes and fees. I am getting ready to have to deal with a headache once I try to register.

I'm also registering in LA County when I get back. I was told they will be giving me a check made out to the CA DMV for the state sales tax. When you go to register there will be extra County and City taxes along with numerous fees. So you'll end giving the DMV the check from Granger and then paying the difference yourself. There's a calculator on the CA DMV website where you can estimate the total taxes and fees. There are close to 20 different fees that drive the cost up quite a bit. Depending on what city in LA County you're in will determine the final cost.

I was told via phone that Granger would mail me the check made out the CA DMV and the amount due to the DMV may be slightly higher or lower. If it's lower, I don't get refunded but if it's higher, the CA DMV would notify and work with Granger for the difference and I wouldn't be responsible for any discrepancy. This didn't sound right as I can't imagine the CA DMV working with any out of state dealer on anything but who knows.

It's too bad that a flipper ruined this for everyone, would have been so much easier just to pay any tax directly to DMV (I've done this with the purchase of an out of state used vehicle before and it was super easy, DMV just tells you what you owe and you cut the check).

You would think that you would get a crime discount for living in the Desert.
Hold on to your wallet... $599! Not to mention the taxes of over $4600

That's insane... That's more like 10% tax plus the registration.

In Texas, it was 6.25% ($2812) and under 1/3 the registration fees ($185 - renewal is less). I don't know how you guys in California do it. I am sure there are states less expensive than Texas too.

In Texas, it was 6.25% ($2812) and under 1/3 the registration fees ($185 - renewal is less). I don't know how you guys in California do it. I am sure there are states less expensive than Texas too.

5.5% tax and 128 registration for Wisconsin. But then, we have to shovel snow in the winter and replace cars every 20 years whether you want to or not assuming you drive it in the winter.

My total registration bill is going to be close to $6,000 when it's all added up. Thankfully this will be the last vehicle I ever buy in CA. Should have our retirement house completed in Montana next summer and they have zero sales tax.

That’s about 4 years property tax on 3800 sq ft of house and 5 acres in TN, with an extra 36x40 garage.

I'm in the same boat with the order Modification money. Did Granger offer any info on who was in charge of filing or how long. I'm without any info other than it has to be done.

Granger asked me if I had a certificate number for the Order Modification offer, which the Ford Marketing folks did not have available for me. Ford said Granger would need to work with their Assigned Marketing Rep at Ford to escalate it (I'm guessing that is the "exception process"). Ford did have the certificate number for the Model Year Transition private offer, but seemed like Granger had that info already, although it is showing for the "Level B" amount instead of the higher "Level A" amount for earlier reservations even though this was an Oct. 2020 res.
