bare metal vs. powder coat skids and sliders

Skids and sliders gets banged up. I’m leaning towards bare metal and spray paint for ease of touch up and slight cost savings. What am I missing; why would someone choose powder coated sliders?

Understand your logic, but bare metal with rust like crazy. You'll be chasing rust spots after every wash or rain. Spend the money, alleviate the frustrations of rust. Yes, you will still have to touch up here and there, but not the entire skid plate.

I wouldn’t leave them bare. Are you saying diy prime and rattle can won’t hold up as well as the powder coating, or that it’s just not worth the price difference given cost of supplies and time to self-prep them?

I wouldn't mind the top of it being panted or coated to help stop rust or corrosion but I live where they use a ton of salt on roads and plan on doing a lot of beach driving. I get where you are coming from cuz the underside will just get scratched off easy so a fast spray can touch up would be perfect

Powder coating is an industrial process and will be applied thicker than a can of spray paint. Brother, I'm not telling you what to do, but, I, and I alone, believe that a serious base coat will pay for itself in the long run.

As soon as powder coat gets a scratch in it water infiltrates and it doesn't last much longer than spray paint. Only thing is you can't touch it up.

Use Steel-It paint, it's about $30 a can but it is worth it (it's very popular with off road buggies)

It's easy to spray and makes a nice semi-gloss to flat finish​

Easy to touch up and blends real well (can't really see the touch ups)​

​

It's very thick and durable (almost as tough as powder coat)​

Just sand the part with 36 grit paper or sandblast and spray it (no primer needed) and it's also weld through

I think I'm following here.
You want rock sliders. I assume non OEM since those already come PCd and you wouldn't strip them. That would be dumb extra work.

However, we presume you have the choice between PCd and bare metal. Maybe you're saving some money by going bare metal.

If you are only occasionally going crawling, my advice would be to get the sliders PCd and touch up with spray if you ever scar them up. That way when you're pavement driving, the standard grit and rocks thrown up wont do any damage to them.

If this Bronco is a trail toy and will see most of it's life at consistently varying degrees of pitch and roll just go with bare metal and buy a pallet of spray paint.

+1 for Steel-it. Use Steel-it on metal and SEM Trim Black on plastic. Keep a case of each and have fun.

If it’s normal powder coating (not that wrinkle crap) just hit the scratch with a can of spray paint. I use VHT roll bar paint, $10 a can. It’s a perfect match. My Jeep sliders are probably 50% spray paint now and I can’t tell it apart from the powder coat
