AC to DC Converter

I have an ARB portable compressor. Would love to use it in my garage plugged into an AC outlet when I’m not using it on the go hooked up to a battery. Anyone do something similar and have a recommendation? I know that there are AC to DC converters but have no idea if they will work or how to choose the right one. Thanks!

Which model do you have? Based on that you can determine amperage/wattage required for the inverter. Their base single compressor model is 32a (420W) which would mean you would need a minimum of a 600W inverter (using the 80% rule). That is their smallest unit, they all go up from there.

I'd buy a U1 sized battery with terminal lugs and hook a small (5A) battery charger to it. Then you have 12V available for testing anything else automotive such as radios.

If you just want a shop compressor. Buying an AC compressor makes more sense to me. It would be more portable if you needed to use it somewhere else.

That's what I'd do too.

If you have a lawnmower or ATV - using that battery (with a charger) would work too -- depending on the size of the battery and such.

A straight up DC power supply does exist, but it would be cheaper and easier to just use a battery and small charger.

Thanks for the responses. It seems like a converter is not the best idea. I like the battery and charger idea. I’ll price that out and see if it’s worth it.

I've tried oddball ideas like this and they haven't been that practical or worked well.

What does work fantastically in the "home" or trail environment is making use of those Milwaukee or Ryobi batteries (or whatever tool family you have) and buying an air compressor that uses the same battery.

I also have a Viair 88P that makes a great air compressor connected directly to the battery with engine running.

Can you do that, yes, should you, NO!

Portable air compressors are terribly inefficient. By the time you spend the money on an inverter it's a waste for minimal functionality.

If you need something in a pinch, just connect it to your Bronco and air-up what you need.

If you're wanting to run tools and do anything you need constant pressure for you need a reservoir (air tank) attached to your compressor. Just go to Harbor Freight and buy a cheap shop air compressor.
