What makes them so great? They're a factory OEM replacement for the FL2062, which is paper media.

I'm not sure I understand. It states in the spreadsheet that the FL2087 is made in the USA.

Where did you find the absolute ratings for the filters? I don't see anything in the link for the description of the filters he looked at. The Fram is made in China and he said it has a different media than the FL2087 - looked "fluffier" LOL1

Mann+Hummel, while German owned, has a filter assembly plant in Fayetteville, NC where many Motorcraft filters are likely produced. It’s similar to how BMW has a car plant in SC, etc.

Motorcraft (or Mann+Hunmel) will never publish efficiency specs, MC just says their filters must meet 80% at 20 microns (Motorcraft Efficiency Claims), and I doubt Mann+Hummel is going to spend money making it too much better than their contract requires. They probably produce a cellulose media for their most stringent OEM contract then use that same media for all the OEM filters they're contracted to produce. As you can see below the OEM's tend not to be too stringent, and award contracts primarily based on cost I would guess.

Here is an older chart showing an OEM filter efficiency test: I doubt things have changed too much, if anything filters seem to be getting worse:

The Fram Endurance states 99% at 20 microns and considering it uses a synthetic filtration media it makes sense. Fram Endurance . Like I said though I wouldn’t use Fram/First Brands spin-on filters in the 2.3 because the leak past the media internally, the cartridge for the 2.7/3.0 is fine though. The Amsoil EA and Royal Purple oil filters are the same as the Fram Endurance and are made by First Brands.

Premium guard will respond to emails that their XL/EX line which includes Carquest Premium, Napa Gold, etc is 98.7% efficient at 15 microns and 99% at 20 microns Premium Guard Discussion. More discussion.

As much as I wish it wasn’t true, the quality of the filters made in Asia are trouncing the US assembled First Brands (Fram) or Mann+Hummel products in Efficiency and build quality. If buying a 100% US filter is your goal regardless of performance I don’t know how possible that is. You can either buy a US assembled one that is owned by a German Company (Mann+Hummel, same as Motorcraft) or an Asian manufactured one produced by a US owned company (First Brands/Fram, Premium guard). I have a bunch of Fram Endurances but I'll probably go with the CarQuest Premiums (Premium Guard EX) in the future.

Charts, graphs and a wealth of information. I couldn't find the exact thread, so I thought I'd tag him here.

Fram Synthetic Endurance and Amsoil filters are pretty well unbeatable. The Fram filter is exclusively sold at Walmart while Amsoil's are sold from their dealers. I think they're the same filter sold at about $2 difference...

A couple of things stand out:

1. Although aFe states tested to ISO 4548-12, they do not publish the results (unless I missed them). This is important so that you know the efficiency rating. You are seeking something along the lines of 99% at 20 microns.

2. The media appears to be cellulose-based, perhaps a blend, but aFe does not state that either, so you are left to guess. Cellulose is not as efficient as synthetic media and if the aFe filter is cellulose, then you are paying premium prices where you could have synthetic media for the same price or less.

With that said, I am currently running an aFe Dry Pro S air filter and will see how it does over time.

For oil filters, I recommend the FRAM Endurance (available only at Walmart) due to its full synthetic media, ISO 4548-12 test results of 99% at 20 microns, a decent price point, and overall construction quality.
