...so I tried to negotiate.
I think this is the issue, not that you did your due diligence and research. They probably thought you'd continue to try and negotiate/penny pinch along the way, which could make you a high maintenance customer. Then, as a result of them spending additional time talking about the build and trying to explain pricing, you'd turn into a less profitable customer. (Time = Money) If they are a busy shop and already booked out, they have the luxury of turning down jobs based on their past experience—choosing whether they actually want your business rather than simply needing it.

I am not a shop owner, but I do consider myself an educated customer and have a great deal of respect for small businesses.

I understand your point, but I disagree with calling it penny-pinching. This was a five-figure build, and I asked if there was room to meet in the middle after comparing other reputable shops that were several thousand dollars less. That’s normal due diligence and negotiation, not penny-pinching.

When they stood firm on the price, I was prepared to pay it. I wasn’t trying to negotiate every part or squeeze them along the way. That’s why being labeled “not a good fit” over asking technical questions and negotiating upfront doesn’t sit right with me.

I’m all bout small business too obliviously but not without negotiation. That’s part of dealing with a small business. And they can simply say no. It was poorly handled.

I am not calling you a penny pincher, my explanation is from the perspective of the shop.

Devil's Advocate: Maybe they are right? If you don't understand their opinion (not saying you should either) this may not have gone well and there is a good chance you'll have a better experience somewhere else anyway.

They did. They told you wouldn't be a good fit.

This thread appears to be a temper tantrum because you didn't get what you wanted.

Obviously I’m not going to use them, but I felt it necessary to share my experience as it was uncalled for. Again business is business you challenge from both sides or you’re doing it wrong. Either way you work through it to find some middle ground or part ways. Put being transparent on those decisions is key.

We can read.

Again, it reads like an entitled individual is mad that they didn't get what they wanted.

"I shopped around and found you do the best work."

"I think your price is too high, I want to negotiate your already well known quality service, and only pay this."

"What do you mean you don't want my money after I've tried undercutting your price?"

"I'll blast you over the forums."

As an individual that works on vehicles for a living, I don't fault them for denying services. I bet they're busy enough with customers that don't bat an eye at cost, they likely don't have time to deal with someone arguing cost out of the gate.

With the substantial effort put in to discuss this experience, and your equally long winded review, I can in my thought understand the shops side and concur with others statements here about being a high maintenance customer. I’m generalizing here because I don’t know the actual conversation, you, or them but I’ve experienced this before and it does get exhausting to deal with and I’ve dealt with regulatory lawyers on several occasions. I can appreciate someone strong in their opinion and stance but this whole thing reads like spite more than genuine feedback.
