Seems to me that a relatively simple piece could be designed, molded or 3D printed and then clipped to the flare itself to fill in the gap. It would remove still attached to the flare when the flares are removed.

I'm pretty sure he is TRYING to break it, so he can develop products to sell. As I said in another post, if he has a good accountant, all of this is R & D and qualifies for a tax credit. You want robust aftermarket support don't you? This is how you develop products...
