This has a lot to do with it as well, a lot of my driving habits come from riding. One thing I adapted to with the bronco is to downshift as I normally would but apply the brakes anyway since the engine braking sucks.

Vehicles now don't have a tow/haul or O/D off for non-tucks. The O/D off has been replaced with either just an "S" option or "M" for manual. Most 1/2 ton trucks will still have it but not labeled, or you double click the button on the shifter like for the F150 column shifter.
