We made it to Copper Harbor, which is also the northern terminus of U.S. 41--downtown Miami is on the other end of this one. We're firmly in copper mining country now, and the historical evidence is all around. But this is also the port for the Queen IV, the ferry that we'll be taking tomorrow...
We crossed the canal to take in some more local Finnish culture at Finlandia University.
...and then crossed back over the canal again to head out into the countryside, to the site of a preserved Finnish homestead, the Hanka Homestead. This homestead was still in operation and...
The next morning in Houghton, we dove into the local Finnish culture with some Pannukakku at Suomi.
Houghton has a wonderful river-side downtown; we strolled around for a while at the shops and then down to the riverfront, where we happened upon the birthplace of pro hockey:
By now, we...
Before reaching Houghton and the Keweenaw Peninsula, we had to make our way through the Huron Mountains, so a stop for dinner in Marquette Harbor was in order. By this time in the trip, I was beginning to realize that if we were doing this in my old Jeep, we would have been exhausted beyond...
On our second morning in Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, we headed to the east side towards Grand Marais. The eastern side of Pictured Rocks is dominated by beaches and absolutely enormous dunes. Some beach time along Superior was in order first...
...but as we continued we got into the...
We made it across the Peninsula to Munising, and stayed right on the coast with a view of the South Bay. By this time it was getting late, and we made a stop at a beach-side food truck for some fresh Lake Superior trout. We had made our resolve to eat as much fresh catch from Lake Superior as...
The Michigan U.P. is blessed with so many miles of untouched beaches and dunes along both the Lake Michigan and Lake Superior coastlines. As we continued west on US 2 towards Manistique, we couldn't help but stop at several of them to stretch the legs. US 2 runs right along the coast, so you...
This was the first big road trip in the Bronco since picking it up in June...we travelled up through the Mitten, across the Mackinac Strait to the U.P., and back down through Wisconsin across 10 days. This wasn't a wheeling trip for me (although we did hit a bunch of access roads), but rather a...
Put my old Midland GMRS stuff that I had in the Jeep, in the Bronco. Used the Mountains2Metal antenna bracket for the antenna, and then just stuck the base unit in the center console.
Yup that's what I did in my Jeep, installed the ARB DC plug straight to the battery for when I wanted to run direct to it all the time. Feels like with Bronco this should be achievable in software, wish there was a setting for it in the dash.
Coming from Jeep, the behavior of these 12v DC ports is very annoying. Jeeps have a 2-position fuse for the cargo 12v DC plug, so you can set it to be always on, or switched on/off with the ignition. This is very handy when running a 12v fridge on a lithium battery, as you can let the lithium...
The other comments here about the differences in water fording vs. sitting in mud are spot on. You have to keep the vehicle moving. If you are going to be playing in mud like this, prepare for part failures and accelerated wear on components. Hub bearings, axle seals, any lubricated joint...
I usually go over there about once a year. Trail 0 is the access trail into the rest of the trail system. Trail 3 is a nice scenic easygoing loop, as long as you stick to the main trail. Trail 5 is another easy one. If it has been raining/wet there then the difficulty will ratchet up quickly...
Added the BuiltRight Industries Large Molle Bags to the back of the front seats. Nice and slim so they don't intrude on rear occupant space, but basically give a nice big deluxe pocket. Zip to the top corners to create a map pocket. Zip all the way open to access additional storage.
Serves a...
I have used this Napa truck bed cap weatherstripping tape (part # 7701763) for many years to diagnose and fix leaks on my Jeep tops. Just another product to try that might help out: https://www.napaonline.com/en/p/BK_7701763
Nice to meet you Rick 😄
The fridge is the ARB Classic II 50 qt. Fits perfect in the 4-door cargo area even with the rear seats reclined fully. I strapped it down to the anchors with some Rok Straps.
It matches the height of the rear swing gate opening almost exactly. I bet that if you...
