Check out "Budget Bronco" on YouTube. It is a good video. He tested 285/75R16 on a Base Bronco with success. This would be the same size as a 285/70R17. You don't need a lift.

BFG has a new tire now called the Trail Terrain T/A. They build a P265/75R16 (roughly 32") and it kinda has the same look just milder. I am going to try them on my base if I ever get it as I am not much of an off-roader either, mostly hwy and some dirt roads. Not much out there on them because...
