How many people actually wear out an engine? If it doesn't fail catastrophically from a head gasket leak, or running it out of oil, most people will trade in their car before the engine is trashed.
That idea is being researched, but it's a long, long way to practicality. Even if you could "spray" some collector onto a surface, you still need to connect it to an inverter, and connect the inverter to the grid.
You don't need motors. All (or at least almost all) current installations have the panels at a fixed angle. You lose maybe 30% of the possible energy, but it makes the installation and maintenance much cheaper. There is a LOT of roof space available. Tall skyscrapers aren't a good candidate, but...

Power companies CAN build solar fields cheaper than coal plants. The problem is a large solar field might produce 3MW if the conditions are perfect. The last coal plant I was in produced 2.24GW under all weather conditions and acted as a base load which solar can never do.
