We found that in the manual too, and it could be a bad sensor. it was a complete downpour when the wipers slowed down.

drove highway speeds (55-65 mph) during heavy rain and when the wipers are set to high or low speed, after 40 seconds they go into Intermittent and wipe every 5 seconds even during a downpour (have to reset the switch from high/low to off then back to high or low) . Intermittent switch setting...
