Most transfer cases have clutches inside. These can go between "open" and "closed". With no power input the clutch in the transfer case would be open, thus free spinning the front prop shaft. My understanding is that 4A is having the computer/electronics control this instead of an old school...
This is what I do too. Maybe my claim of "improves handling" is a misnomer. What I should have said was that the steering feel and road grip was noticeably better.
I think I'll try this then. I image that the non sas badlands has much less drive line resistance due to 33 tires and not 35s. Maybe this is partially due to the front axle not being dead weight? Maybe @Ford can confirm?
I'm not locking the front diff, just the center diff/transfer case. I'm pretty sure that 4A is "unlocked" or slip for on road driving and 4H locks the transfer case so front and rear prop shafts can spin at the same speed. I wouldn't want to snap an axle with the front diff locked haha!
