They are the pins (1 on each side) on the front edge side of the middle panel (I have a 4 door) that drop into the positioning holes of the bracket the hard top sits on. You can see them from inside the car. I did the fix without removing the hardtop. I had to unbolt the sunrider and slide it...

You need to be careful about the bolt alignment on the plate securing the sunrider to the 2nd panel. I tried moving the top position forward, but was unhappy about the way the screws were aligning with the hole on the rear center bracket. It presents a potential "strip" issue.
