Why hard plastic is a bad thing? It's more durable than leather or any other soft material. Have you ever seen a LR3 dashboard? It's soft, it feels premium but also it cracks because of the sun exposure. Old Toyota have hard plastic all over it and that's why it last so long. All work truck...

I believe the difference between your 20 years old Accurate and the Ford Bronco is just the easy-real-time access to internet. You just weren't able to access to a Accura forum 20 years ago to see how others customer has problems that you never experienced.
