Mostly I was on a self imposed budget, but I also like tinkering with my 4x4s. So, having something already "built" wouldn't be as much fun. My intent never was to build a rock crawler (we have a couple very capable XJs in the family for that), but more to build a backcountry explorer...
I'm in! Not sure which day(s) yet, but probably Tuesday through Thursday (avoiding the weekend excessive crowds). If anyone is interested in more mild trails, but in seeing world class rock art and old uranium mining sites, I'd be happy to organize a day in the San Rafael Swell, which is about...
The White Rim Trail is easy wheeling, but the views are spectacular. Did you drive it all in a day (100+ miles) or camp out? Your post brought back very good memories of the many trips (biking and wheeling) I've made on that road. It also made me realize that my two youngest kids have never had...
I remember that post and the responses. It's an XJ thing, apparently, and some will never get it.
The Bronco Safari sounds like fun. I'll find your tread and respond there.
I've had my 2 Door BD for just over a year now. It's lifted 1.5" (Bilstein 5100s) and has 33s on it. Still haven't done any serious rock crawling in it yet, but it's been more than acceptable for all the back country exploring/camping we have done. Overall the belly clearance hasn't been an...
I have no regrets at 1.5". I'm running 285/70/R17 Falken AT3Ws and think the wheel well gap is just about right. With 265/70R17s, it might be too much. Although the picture doesn't show it, it has the factory rake which I like. I've never understood the obsession for leveling--throw a cooler and...
I've already made the jump and installed 5100s on my 2 Door Black Diamond, setting them for 1.5" lift. They are definitely an improvement over the stock Hitachis, but I have yet to push their off-highway limits.
Your post is excellent information though. I have a friend that is considering...
Tricky Dick's observation is right! My 2 door Black Diamond with 2 inches of lift and 33s simply cannot go where my previous 98 XJ with 3 " of lift and 31s could go (rock crawling), and it had open diffs (no lockers). I know this because I drove that XJ over hundreds of miles of trails in and...
Please explain to me how a spacer puts more stress on wheel bearings than a wheel with an equivalent offset. I'm not a fan of spacers (for other reasons) but I can't see the difference.
I can assure you that it's not a good feeling, but like most things it will pass. Not such a new car though. I've had it 9 months to enjoy. So having it sitting in the shop a week or so doesn't hurt.
Thanks for the support though.
Given what I know now, I should have gone with the EXPs. It's a better shock than the stock Bilsteins. The only drawback with the EXPs is that by reusing the stock coils, the suspension travel stays the same. I was aiming to improve that with the Sasquatch suspension--although not by very much...
It's still at the shop (undrivable) and I haven't had the chance to measure it myself. The shop manager told me that he did pre and post measurements and that my eyes are correct--it sits 3" taller than stock.
I'm certain that I bought the wrong springs and possibly the wrong rear shocks. I've...
The following Sasquatch (High Lift) shocks and insulators (bump stops) are for sale. They were installed, but have less than 10 miles on them. I'll either ship them or deliver them (if you're reasonably close).
