Will this work with the top rolled all the way back (NOT removed, just completely collapsed?) If so, that's a decent compromise IMO

Not sure if "lock" is the right word, but it would be a lot more useful if it was prevented from opening when the tailgate is closed. It may be enough to make the handle hang down more so that it isn't exposed with the tailgate is closed. Beyond that, perhaps some sort of latch on one end that...

those straps over the swing gate look so bad. Hopefully someone finds a better way to do this.
