It's totally possible, you just have to be a special kind of stupid to do it. Here is a legendary video of a Corvette that is probably a good example of what happened to this Bronco.
That would have been a "Money Shift" which would spin the engine at a higher RPM than it is designed to. This usually results in a connecting rod leaving the engine block at a high rate of speed and not a vaporized clutch. The money part is you opening your wallet to replace the shattered engine.
The comments in the reddit thread indicate that the flywheel was blackened, so that means things got really hot! My guess is that it was a clutch dump at high rpm, but it isn't a heavy enough clutch to hang on. He probably saw smoke and thought he was doing a burn-out, but was dumb enough not...

They are gatorback mudflaps, I believe. I did notice that the bolts are rusting on them, so I probably will be replacing all of the hardware with something a bit more resilient in the near future.
