How well do these handle automatic car washs?

I like these but would want them the full length, up near the front wheel to block rocks. The price seems outrageous. Also to protect from door dings.

It looks like it should be possible to make a step that mounts to the rock slider, that would also serve to protect the sides from rocks. I saw one guy is looking into this, has anyone else tried?
