I think something that unfolds made of plywood (maybe Baltic Birch) or aluminum. Secure it with a cargo strap across it from the hooks in the back, I think there are some. Then, maybe add a telescoping leg or two for extra support.
You might consider removing that T- handle disconnect. Someone with a wire coat hanger can fish it out in the top of the door and open your garage door. Unless its the only way in to your garage, you do not really need it.
I second that. Do not paint, powder coat it. Cost a little more, lasts a lot longer. Usually takes a few days at a good powder coat place. They will have lots of colors and high gloss down to dull and lots in between. It is a ceramic powder that is baked on to the piece.
