How much brighter are these reverse lights than stock LED's?

You are correct. The adapter plugs directly into the factory harness/connector. The other end plugs into the speaker, one pos and one neg. They're different size plugs so you can't do it incorrectly.

Ambient lighting works for me. Not the same thing... maybe related? My rear cargo lights never come on with the door open, hard to see when trying to buckle in our boy in the back car seat. I have checked all vehicle settings, but didn't see anything for this?
