It’s been said when low octane fuel is used going on a slight incline valve rattle or noise is heard. This is something that’s a know fact … I’ve always adviced friends / fam use higher octane gas and check oil level

SO!!! Why am I hearing it a bit here n there on my brand new Raptor going on a slight uphill ? Taking off from stop n go … ???? Not constantly. Not at least to my ears … unless it’s a “ford” thing ??? It’s faint but noticeable for a split second (685 miles) fyi

These motors are loud anyway. Do you have any audio of it to post. I know you are new, have you changed oil and filter after break in?

I just checked the dip stick and the oil is at the very tip. So it will need a quart or so , weird on a new engine. New truck

Odd. Are you using top-tier fuel? You could try 93 if you have it, if not blend with E85 to get 93. That said, it shouldn't have any pre-ignition even with 87.

My Android App "Octane and Ethanol Calculator" can get you a perfect blend at any octane you desire.

Double checked the oil level after 1 hour of shut down and it’s full. !!

I’m from the 70’s lol. I have never mixed e85 with 91 octane. And yes I always use she’ll ,76 or chevron It’s bothering me that I hear that noise. Unless it’s something else. It’s my first Ford in over 30 years. Last one was a 91 cobra lol
I love my Raptor ! And I’m about to upload the ford tune. But I’m being hesitant. The noise I described is very faint and a split second on low rpm going up a slight incline. And I’ve heard it momentary when I speed up and it down shift from 10 to 8 It’s weird …

anywho. So mix E85 with 91 ? Are absolutely sure this is ok ?

I would say with top tier 91 there isn't really a need to bump up to 93 by blending, especially if you've heard the noise across different stations and fills. It's perfectly safe to add some E85 to increase octane.

However, if you want to totally eliminate fuel/knocking and since you lived in So Cal, try adding 3 gal of E85 (it's actually 78% ethanol) to the balance of 91 pump when very close to empty. That will get you 93 octane and should help rule out pre-ignition.

Thank you for your advice. I did this earlier and it seems like it stopped doing it. VP octane booster I prune in about 8-10oz to the tank. And drove it. Didnt hear it this time around I will keep an ear out in the AM … I have filled th tank with 76. Once it’s time to fill up. I’ll go back to Shell again …

These are textbook conditions for spark knock or LSPI—high-load, low-RPM situations. The fuel-air mixture in the cylinder is detonating prematurely or violently instead of burning smoothly, creating a sharp pressure wave that vibrates the engine block and sounds like metallic rattling or clicking.
