I opt’d to camp up there for direct access into the Maze, and some more quiet (I know Dollshouse is busy from rafters/the river and has 3 camps). I ran into some nice backpackers, but otherwise was very quiet. Here’s camp:
just arrived back and that drive sure was rowdy!
I have detailed notes on mpg that are boring. But the highlights are I ran 14 mpg in, and 13 mpg out. Also, from Tea Pot to chimney the crawl was <6mpg…
Anyways, what an adventure. I hope you have a blast in there next fall @Ramble_Offroad. I’m...
Thanks @Ramble_Offroad and @gbub. All packed up and locked and loaded, heading out soon. And Might find a 5 gal in Hanksville to supplement, too, depending on how she’s running. TBD.
Update: I caved and ordered an EZ Spare Tire Mount and 2 X 3 gallon rotopax. I chose these amounts knowing a) previous gas usage from other trails, b) using the rule of thirds (1/3 in, 1/3 out, 1/3 extra), and c) knowing I can turn around if I use more than expected.
If anyone has made (or not...
FYSA, when the training program is started the horn goes off at the start, and then for each calibrated sensor as you walk around the vehicle. and again at the end to signal a completed program. I interpret that your shop completed this training program.
In my troubleshooting I realized a few related things:
1. When I left the tire shop the screen displayed 4 tires with 4 pressures. ~5 min later I got an error with one of the wheels. I realized later that my spare tires pressure was ~5-10 lbs higher than the other tires. But that high pressure...
Thanks for this validation. The rotopax setup is over $400 which just seems crazy for two plastic jugs and a strap system. I keep coming back to just throwing a plastic gas jug into the back for $30 plus gas cost.
Sounds like you’re prepping a killer trip.
For gas, I’m tracking about ~210 miles round trip. I ran 13 mpg through Death Valley last month, while expecting 8-12 crawling tothe Maze. At 20 gal, it’s tight but trying to guess how much extra.
Looking at 2 rotopax on the spare maybe 2x3 gal. Or...
I hope you had a blast. And I’m planning on heading here next week before the offroadeo in Moab. Any updates on the gas needed? I’m headed to chimney rock via Hanksville/Hans Flat with a 4dr badlands sas and shopping for rotopax today…
Thanks for sharing your experience. I really hope it’s not a software update thing. Since I first posted I bought a TPMS-19 tool which immediately added tpms from the original 4 wheels which had been rotated. I did not move the spare back into rotation (again) - I moved onto other things. When I...
Update:
I just visited the tire center. Together we scanned the original spare tire, finding a TPMS sensor is installed, an expected tire pressure (slightly higher than what’s on the car, purposely), and that it’s operating at 433 mhz (expected).
We also scanned all the tires on my car...
