Big Levels 4x4 Trail
Big Levels 4x4 Trail begins in the George Washington National Forest. We headed down Coal Rd. and drove a simple gravel road with lots of camping areas for a few miles before the turn off to the Big Levels 4x4 trail began. I was alone this trip but my spouse was riding shotgun in case I needed help with any lines which only happened twice. The trail is pretty rocky but nothing wild and most off roaders will have enough clearance for the entire trail. The downside to this trail is it is very tight. The branches on this trail are sticking out everywhere and there is no avoiding them. I attempted to remedy this by applying some turtle wax before I even started the trail just so the Bronco had a layer of wax to help the branches glide across the sides instead of scratch. My spouse and I also broke off many branches when we could just while inside the Bronco. The trail took about 2 hours and we were able to pass a couple of rigs down on our way back (there isn't much space for turning around in a lot of areas due to the overgrowth of branches). All in all, it was a trail that was pretty simple and fun. When I washed the rig afterwards, the pinstriping was all superficial and I had just a few permanent scratches in the side mirror plastic as well as one or two nicks in the vinyl stripe I have running down the side of the Bronco.
This trail is doable solo, but always be prepared to self-recover in any situation.
The trail is also near camping as mentioned before, and there are breweries, wineries, and resorts/hotels nearby. Wintergreen resort was close which is where we stayed on this trip, but we've also stayed at Devil's Backbone Campground which isn't incredibly far away on another occasion.
Let me know if you've done this trail or not!
