There were photos/video from the first bronco celebration event in Buena Vista in 2020 (the one with all the snow) that showed two bikes in the back (wheel off) of a 4 door.

It might have been a Bronco sport though......? I think it was red.

The only one i have seen is the Sport with the 2 bikes in it. It was largely advertised with those bikes in the beginning.

Somebody, Performance Bike, I think, usedta make a mag mount thingie that had an (semi-) aerodynamically designed mirror on it.
You placed (and placement was the key) it on your hood, and it was normally flat, but when you slowed down, it popped up, and you could see your bike(s) on the roof rack, thus hopefully reminding you to WatchTF out!!!
Dunno WTF ever happened to it.
I want one for yaks...

We used to do fit 2 with wheels off and luggage in the FJ, so fingers crossed.

I am looking into a back seat delete for MTB transport. Look at the Goose gear products!

I saw one of these mishaps happen, I seriously doubt insurance would cover, and with some bikes going for $4000 each that is an expensive mistake

Was hoping to achieve something akin to this in a four-door (with both sides of the bench down):

Only if you can load them rear wheel first unless you attach the wheel lock to the back of the seat - or remove the rear seat

Oof, the 4Runner looks much smaller in side-by-side photos (I believe the older 4Runners were smaller too?):

If you are saying you have experience that the interior is less spacious in the Bronco, that is concerning. My intent had been to have at least one bike upright in the back, which would mean one wheel off. Ideally, this could be arranged for two bikes as this was the objective in moving towards the more square cabin.
4Runners are a bit longer, so probably fits the cycles better.

There was a post in one of the Bronco FB groups where the OP said he took off the front wheels, let down the back seats, and fit 2 bikes in his 4 door full sized Bronco. I have Thule that we used with my Ram 1500. Bought an extension so hopefully it works with the 35in spare tire.

Used to put two bikes inside my Element with the seat up. Heck, I could put one mtn bike in at an angle with both wheels installed.

I would be nice to put one bike in without the front wheel, but I am not holding my breath.

That’s definitely one drawback of roof mounts. Another is that lifting bikes, especially mountain bikes, to mount or dismount them is rough on people with back problems.

What's wrong with this?

That can suffice, but it adds not only length but width to the vehicle, and the bikes are exposed. On longer trips that just isn’t as good as carrying them inside.

Well, a couple things:

1. With the spare tire on the back and the swing out tailgate, you need additional pieces to make it work. I was trying to make my life simpler and not harder with the Bronco. That effort has become a miserable failure.

2. In the winter, I do not carry my bikes outside, as salt is a problem. So, this is not a 100% solution.

Then I suggest you all read up on removing the back seat. It sounds like any magical exterior solution will not work for you. That’s ok though!
