As most of you have probably seen, the “sound deadening” Ford used on the back side of these panels is a joke. I plan to take the factory material off and use it as a template to get some good dynamat pieces cut out. Once I get the dynamat coverage where I like it, I’m thinking about sealing it in with bed liner. The bed liner should keep the dynamat in there tight. And be an easy surface to clean up.

Don’t forget to spray the bed liner with the roof fully installed on your vehicle. Having all the panels fused together will create the ultimate sound deadening experience.

Good idea, but it’s going to get heavy with the bed liner if you do both sides.

I would only do the bed liner on the underside. Paint on the top side.

It is a free headliner. I will just remove it and put on a hot heads setup.

Had to look up hotheads headliner. It’s not the same thing. Those are stick on panels. Not sound deadening. Those only have 2 strips of adhesive on the back. That’s not how sound deadening works.

They have a sound deading add on that uses strips of dyno-mat type stuff to add mass. More mass is how you sound deaden.

with the hot heads you get both sound deading with mass and absorption with their headliner fabric.

I have used Dynamat on a couple projects. It’s great for sound deadening. But it’s flexible. Do you think bed liner will remain stuck to it? I have Rhino lining in my truck and it’s flexible, so that should work, not sure about some of the more rigid liners. In any case, I really like your idea and really hope you pursue it. Anxious to hear results.

I assume that, like Jeeps, the hothead liners will be available along with sound assassin sound deadening strips. I think that's going to be a better fit and finish than dynamat with liner over it.

Also, while the hothead liners are better described as insulation than sound deadening, they allegedly reduce 3 to 6 decibels, which is pretty significant.

with the hot heads you get both sound deading with mass and absorption with their headliner fabric.
Removing what is probably nothing more than nonwoven trunk liner fabric and replacing it with bed liner will remove the acoustically absorbant property the fabric provided. Eg when sound gets in (and it will) or when the stereo is cranked, you will have more resonance.

Also whatever layer is under that from the factory is probably very close to most dynamat type products.

Finally, good luck getting less bubbles in your install than the factory did (based on the pics I've seen of exposed areas so far, not on OP's unknown skill level) 😬

They did an acceptable job for free, on a removable roof, in an off road vehicle, as far as I can tell

As soon as hothead headliners comes out I'm going to replace the cheap carpet they are gluing on with something of quality.

Aren't the Hothead corrugated cardboard with foil on the back and a layer of cloth on the visible side? If like the Wrangler, they also leave about 1/3 of the surface uncovered.

They leave sections of the surface uncovered due to the recessed design of the Wrangler panels, but it work very well and look/feel professional. They're not crappy shag carpet that Ford is simply haphazardly gluing to the roof.

I just don’t like the look of Hotheads product and think it will look funny with the interior finish of the Bronco top…
