I bought the 2nd year GT350 (2017) and was glad I did. There were issues with not having the diff cooler on the electronics package, so they added it in 2017. The 2017 was much more preferable to the 2016.

I'm waiting for the 2022 model for budget reasons, but not really disappointed. It'll give me an opportunity to see how things play out regarding trim levels and accessories.

Um...obviously I bought a 2001 Ford Escape...lol. It seemed to me that on new launches sometimes extra care is taken so the corporation isn’t embarrassed.

Really, the smart people are waiting for the 2022 to make sure thereā€˜s no problems. I’m not smart people. ;)

I figure worst case buying this year is having to force Ford to buy it back under the lemon law if there’s a major problem that doesn’t get fixed.

In my opinion, it is unlikely that there will be a significant reliability difference in 2021 vs. 2022. A lot of the complex parts (engine/trans) are already proven.

The warranty helps eliminate risk of major issues, and you can always sell it if the reliability is later determined to be poor.

Minor issues, such as trim cracks and leaks probably won't be known for several years anyway.

It's based on an existing architecture, existing engines, only the manual is a new unit. The AC controls look like they're out of the F150, etc. There's not a lot of new stuff to have kinkage worked out of. If something does go awry, then that's what the warranty is for.

If you don't absolutely need one now it's still better to wait until the next year, they might revise it a bit. Maybe come stock with better tires, add a feature or two standard to the base model to make it more compelling, adjust suspension a little bit, stuff like that. That combined with some discounts, maybe buying a used one, or whatnot.

In the extreme case it could be like the new Toyota Supra where the second model year gained like 50 horsepower.

if you can wait for 2022, you can wait for 2023. when does it end

2022 could get a new color. You never know.
Or the color you want goes away....I know quite a few people that wanted an Avalanche Grey Raptor, and they stopped after 2017. The only meaningful engineering change Ford did on the Gen 2 Raptor from the 2017 launch was change the oil pan from plastic to metal as they had a tendency to leak.

I am less concerned with FY MY with the Bronco since I will get the 2.7 and auto trans which are proven and they are borrowing plenty in the chassis from the Ranger.

All that said, I will be keeping my Raptor and get teh Bronco in addition so I will wait till fall of 21 and order a 22 since spring of 21 I have one last semester of college to pay for my son.

I think i read Mike Levine say that one of the safety features of the mid package becomes standard on all Ford models in 2022. I cant remember what.

im not waiting.

The way automakers operate these days, they will almost always hold back something to entice new buyers to get the next model. So if you wait for 2022, by the time you're ready to make a purchase, there will be "rumors" of something else you'll want to buy. The cycle wont stop.

I think there's some wisdom in waiting, but my recent experience with buying a first model year of a vehicle(2018 Honda Odyssey purchased in August 2017), has been fine. Some recalls, yeah, but nothing that would dissuade me from getting a first year model again.

Now if you look at the new Supra first model year vs. the second, it does seem the first year folks got hosed. Less power (probably), and the suspension tuning isn't as dialed in.

Overall, it's your core motivations that matter. I think there are wise reasons to wait, but there can also be unintended consequences (colors going away, trim options getting pared-down due to lack of popularity, etc.). Me, if I wait, I'll never get one. I'm gonna' try to stick with this thing just for fun.

Not waiting..... but I tend to think that it will be a short wait for the 22.....6/8 months maybe?

April to Dec at the latest?

Reliability doesn't seem to be an issue based on the research of problems with first year and second year models.

The conventional wisdom is future models will get new desirable stuff - and some people "need" the new hotness.

Here are a couple of reasons I am happy with my choice to get mine in April / May / June 2021:

1) 2-Door: Even here, an enthusiasts site, 4-doors are running 2-1 . I have been looking at 2-door Wranglers for the past 2 years - and they are hard to find in anything other than Black or White.

Fact: 2-doors aren't popular. What if Ford decides to drop the model in a year or two and focus on 4-doors?


2) 7 models?!?! That is a lot of options. When will Ford streamline it? I can easily see Ford going to: Base+, Off-Road, On-Road, and Top of the Line.

Most believe 2022 will have the Warthog/Raptor taking the slot the First Edition is in. Will there be less options and the models become more standard based in year 2-3?


3) Ground floor - there is a whole market place and clubs and information that will be coming out once the vehicle is released. I'd like the option to be in the beginning - where standards, expectations, etc are established rather than joining / trying to join an established system.

I keep vehicles for at least 10 years and I plan on keeping this Bronco for at least 12 - if not for the rest of my days to pass it along to my daughter. I reserve the right to swap it out for a newer model in 2030+ but as of now, I don't see anything that year 2-3 will have that is scads better than year 1.

I own a 2011 F-150 (she turns 10 in May 2021) and the F-150's since then aren't "holy crap, I should have waited" better than my current truck w/ 105,000 miles on it.

Why wait? No one is promised tomorrow - and I've waited long enough (2004!!!).

I figure with the ā€˜21s available in April at the earliest, ā€˜21 will be a short model year. Since I’ll be ready around the first of the year ā€˜22, I’ll wait and see how it goes with the early adopters, figure out exactly what I want, and order a 2022 in fall ā€˜21 for delivery probably in early ā€˜22.
