Hello all:

I have two questions: I know they have been gone over a lot but I still can't get a handle on them. I have read a lot of engine posts and still could use some input.

Background Info:

I am buying a Black Diamond (I want the mgv seats and the hose out interior : a German Shepherd and teenager make that a no brainer).

I currently drive a 2019 Tacoma. My Taco is the first small motor I have dealt with in a long time. I stepped down from a 4 door, 6 speed, full bed Cummins to a Silverado for a little while. I hated the Chevy and went with the Toyota. I love everything about it except the motor. I have not owned a Ford since around 2002 or so. Unfortunately I have not driven a newer one at all. I have owned a '72 Bronco, one or two F150's and two 250's with the International diesel in them.

Questions:

#1 - I have seen several references to a 2" factory lift being available but I can't find it anywhere as a build option. Is this just wishful thinking or something that has been confirmed and if so when/how is it available?

#2 -As stated above; I am currently driving a 2019 Toyota Tacoma with a 6 speed. I love the truck on the highway and long trips but it is an absolute dog when I go anywhere in the mountains. Even smaller hills in my valley cause it to work it butt off. I am leery of getting another 4 cylinder because of this. I have read that the ecoboosts are in the Rangers and F150's: unfortunately I have not been able to get my hands on one to drive and see what they are like. I do know there is a Ford performance boost for the 2.3 ($895 from the dealer).

Will the 2.3 be enough to keep me happy and not getting aggravated when driving in the mountains? Is the performance tune enough to make sure that it won't be an issue? How hard on the engine longevity is the tune? Is the $1895 cost of the V6 worth it? Will I see an actual difference for the money? I am thinking that the painted turret roofs are going to be close to $2k when they are available; I would love to save the money for that but I also don't want to be underwhelmed by the 4 cylinder.

Thank you,

Pat

There never was a factory lift option and the reason your Tacoma is a dog is because of gearing, not the motor.

I will tell you that the Base SR Taco has a 159 hp four-cylinder engine. That engine without a turbocharger is just a hateful piece of garbage that has no place in anything that weighs more than 3000 pounds.

The base model 2.3 L bronco has a turbo engine making 270 hp. Which is pretty much what the 4Runner has, but it’s 310 foot pounds of torque, which is an additional 30 more than the 4Runner.

While it is a heavy truck, I can’t imagine it be a gutless turd like your Terminix Toyota.

Go drive new Ranger. same motor, similar curb weight. then you'll know if it's enough

Put correct gears in it, keep RPMs over 2500, like most small displacement high compression engines, and you’ll see the light. Or, drive it for best MPG, which isn’t great, and complain.

It is impossible to make a 4 cylinder Taco move fast unless something very heavy going very fast hits it from behind.

9.6 or 10.2:1 is not high compression, that's low compression stuff designed to run on junk fuel. Most direct injection NA engines these days are easily pushing 12:1 or 13:1.

It's 160hp trying to move 4000+lbs. You can put gears in to help the 0-30mph times, but there's nothing you can do to help it on the highway when you only have 160hp on tap.

Mine won’t make you think you’ve got a V8, but lower gears helped tremendously as well as shifting above 3000rpms. Pulled a trailer from BC to AR with two elk and had no problem maintaining 65mph+ in the steepest passes. Before gearing though, it sucked.
