I remember when tuning was gaping your plugs and points. From reading I have decided when the new ride comes finally it deserves to be the best it can be. What’s the deal? Is this just a software update? What’s the differences? Is it better to buy from Ford Performance or another brand? I want my warranty so it will be dealer installed. Any enlightenment for an old school guy would help.

I installed the Ford Performance tune last week. I have not re-gapped my plugs and I'm not experiencing any plug blow out. I did not have an ASE mechanic install it, because I think it's ridiculous that someone with a credential can do this simple install better than anyone else. There are no decisions for the user to make while flashing the tune, so why the hell burden a purchaser with finding and paying a mechanic to do this. It's an insult. If Ford were to deny me warranty coverage over this, we will go to court. I do have a cat back and I'm very pleased with the performance. The tune isn't something I expect makes enough steam to blow your engine regardless, but the increase in mid-range torque output is pretty evident. I'm only realizing it got keeps auto start/stop to stay off when selecting between drives. I have a '23 and no one has figured out a way to get Forscan to take care of it, as far as I know.

Hey, Dave! Great questions! So, a new school guy here BUT I have some knowledge to share.

There's a few different options out there for tuning/calibrations. Luckily, we've tested a couple of them on our Lethal Broncos.

We'll start from the top. The Ford Performance Calibration is as simplistic as a "plug n play" to the OBDII of your Bronco. Power numbers below and specifications for retaining the warranty.

The device comes pre-loaded with the calibration, so outside of a potential software update/firmware its ready to go.
  • 3 year/36k mile warranty from new vehicle in-service when installed by a Ford dealer or ASE/Red Seal certified technician
  • Peak torque = 433 lb.-ft. at 3,500 RPM
  • Peak power = 355 HP at 5,500 RPM

Moving forward, Burger Motorsports offered their JB4 device WITH an option for bluetooth connectivity so changing MAP settings is as easy as a click of a button on the mobile app ( sold separately ).
I describe that more of a "piggyback" device where it more or less fools the computer that the truck needs more fuel, boost, etc.. So, the computer is never FULLY calibrated.

We did a Dyno test with a Local Customers First Edition 2.7L and honestly, the results speak for themselves!

Here's that video:

There's a couple more, but some are a complete re-calibration and I know you'd like a warranty retained. BUT, feel free to reach out to me or any one of us here at Lethal Performance and we'll be more than happy to go over the options in more depth and get you to your goals!

Thanks so much!

I run the Ford Calibration, received from Lethal. I installed it myself. My long-time dealer knows how I do things, I would not perceive an issue with my warranty. It's the Ford tune, calibrated by Ford. I do not need an ASE to install especially since Ford instruction walks you through step by step.

I went with Ford because they are one of the few tunes that allow you to recalibrate gears and tire size, also it adjusted shift points. I am pretty happy with it. Also have a few other mods, that you can see in the sig.

For the sake of haveing all the info in one place, what other options for calibration are released? What other options are there than Whipple, JB4, and Ford Performance?

Does it need to be purchased thr a third party or is it available directly through Ford?

@Acadist

I believe you can purchase through Ford Performance, but Lethal had a much better price. Also, I am in S.FL, so I received my unit very quickly. Much sooner than I thought it would come. Maybe its just Lethal's shipping ability??

Thanks! The more I read I am pretty sure I am going to go with the Procal. Couple of questions; I understand for the warranty it needs to be installed by a ‘pro’ but will I be able to install updates or will it need to be taken to the dealer? Are the units in stock and what is the lead time? Does this need a PC only, or is it something I can use my iPad? Finally Scheduled mid June and want to be ready

I was told only reason I’d have to gap or change plugs is if I ran the track all day.

Truck runs like a beast with the meth added.

For the sake of haveing all the info in one place, what other options for calibration are released? What other options are there than Whipple, JB4, and Ford Performance?
Whipple and Ford Performance are actually the only flash calibrations available for the 2.7L at this time. When I say flash calibration I mean that the PCM and TCM are both flashed with a new strategy. Whipple's calibration also raises the top speed limiter while the Ford Performance one does not. Both Whipple and Ford Performance give you the ability to adjust for tire size and gear ratio changes as well. They both give you the ability to disable the auto start/stop feature.

The other options such as the JB4 and VR Tuning are both piggy back modules. They use a harness to plug a box in between sensors which modifies the signal to the sensors and allows the vehicle to make more boost/power. Neither of these options actually flash the PCM/TCM so no changes to transmission tuning are made with them. These also don't have the ability to adjust for tire size, gear ratio changes, top speed limit and the auto/start stop feature.

Please let us know if there's anything else we can help you with in the meantime.

Thanks!

That's a great first question. Truthfully, I personally feel like you should be able to update it BUT the best people to contact would be Ford Performance directly for that clarification.

The devices are on the shelf ready to ship to you!
PC, to my knowledge iOS will not work.

Thanks!

Hi, if I’m going to add the ProCal tuner, is there any benefit in purchasing the Pedal Commander too to get rid of throttle lag? Or will it be redundant?

Also, any recommendation whether I should wait to instal the tune until after the 1,000 mile break in period? Only have 25 miles so far…
