Oopsie... dropped and dented my door this weekend

Bad part is when I picked it up and tried again it went on with ease. And the passenger door was just as smooth. I learned you have to get the door at a certain angle for it drop in place.

I know several people in body shops and sent them pics. 1 guy said its gonna need a door, another said he thinks he can fix it but will need to see it first. I didnt get bags for them. I dont think it woulda helped in this situation. Bad part is I laughed every time I saw a pic of someone doing this. So many times doing my jeep I never imagined this would happen. I have to say the weight wasnt an issue, its the hinge design itself.

We’re you using the guide pin on the lower hinge? I’ve had my doors off a bunch and have never run into this issue. If you have the guide pin and the door at the proper angle it will “sit” on the hinge telling you it is in the correct place. I always start the top bolt before I fully let go. Sorry to see that. But it’s fixable.

My Bronco rolled back in the garage and tweaked the the top corner of the door. Body shop said that because it was aluminum, they had to replace the whole door skin. Price was just under $2500.

I use two people and rubber around panels and door bags AND OVER MY LAWN..... lol,because it only takes once!

I suggest folks use the tool that came with their Bronco

I used the alignment pin on the bottom. It was the top hinge that wasnt in and once it tilted back the bottom hinge just slid over the pin.

Oh gotcha, I more just wanted to ensure there were some pictures to help others that might be considering removing their doors. Doorless driving both on and off road is amazing, less so on freeways though 🧏‍

Somebody above made a really good suggestion: All Bronco owners, the first time you take your doors off and back on, do it in the grass, not on pavement. Until you see how everything lines up and how the hinge pin works, better to be safe.

Sorry that happened to you.
If it makes you feel any better, it could aways be worse. I ended up burying my entire bronco (well at least up over the front hood) in a mud hole that I didn’t check the depth in. Totaled my Bronco. Long-term locals on that trail said they had never seen it so deep there, and even wondered if an angry property owner had brought a excavator in to get back at the off-roaders.

Anyway, i’m now waiting for a newly ordered bronco, and when I get it I’m going to place a sleeping pad or some thing on the driveway under the doors when changing them. I’ll learn from your mistake, and hopefully someone else can learn from mine.

after seeing a couple of threads about this, it was my biggest fear when I took the front doors off this past weekend. I did my best to be super careful taking them off, and felt they came off fine. It's when I went to put them back on that I got real nervous. It felt like no matter what I did it was so "flimsy" hanging on that peg.

Though I will probably never take my doors off, just had a thought. Heavy closed cell pipe insulation that is split slipped on the bottom wouldn't prevent a heavy drop but would give some protection when taking doors off or installing them.

First thing I figured out was make sure you have good lighting. Even if you are in a well lit area it is tough to see if everything is lined up correctly.

Now I light it up and it is much easier.
