Quick question - I’m not much of a car expert but I wanted to understand from the community which engine / car would have less ‘issues’ and age gracefully. Not intending to do much off roading, but perhaps experiment a little. Planning on keeping the car long-term (100K+ miles). The 4door Bronco or a Bronco Sport. I understand they are built differently, but without knowing much about vehicles, looking for thoughts.

Flor clarity, I would get the default automatic transmission on the bronco 4d base, perhaps big bend. On the Sport, I would get the upgraded engine on the Badlands version.

I've read there's a lot of Ranger owners with the 2.3L engine with a fair number of complaints. F-150 owners with the 2.7L engine seem to be happy with it overall. I'm going with the bigger engine without a doubt.

Anyone who has a major concern with sustainability probably should choose the Bronco Sport over the regular Bronco. None of the regular Broncos will get any kind of decent fuel economy in actual use. There's talk of some sort of hybrid later, but we don't yet know exactly what it will be or when it will be available.

If you're gonna mod it, definitely upgrade the intercooler and charge pipes

I don’t mean sustainability in respect to the environment. I mean sustainability in respect to my pocket... Will one have more engine issues than the other In the long-run? Is one engine proven to be more reliable with many miles vs the other? Or.... is the sport going to break down more in the long run?

The OP is asking about 4cyl Sport vs. 4cyl Bronco. Not Bronco 4 vs 6.

I think either is likely to take you well over a 100k miles. As noted by @csj, the Sport will use significantly less fuel over those 100k plus miles.

Given the newness of both, I don’t think anyone can give you a accurate prediction of which will have fewer issues.

What were some of the complaints coming out of the 2.3 engine? I thought they were durable and reliable

People act like direct injection is some experimental technology that will fail after 20k miles and require a complete intake manifold and injector swap. Meanwhile basically every other auto manufacturer is fully direct injected and not failing catastrophically.

Really it’s not a big deal. Ford has been using this engine in the Mustang and Ranger for years, and mostly the people blowing them up are putting aftermarket power mods on to say the least.

If you have a good maintenance schedule and don't have something with premature failures, then it's likely it will make it up to 100k miles without a catastrophic failure. Beyond that it is all a question. Reliability is mostly either early failures or end of life failures. I can say that when I worked at an OEM, we tested engines to 150k miles and that's the trend we saw. Better NVH too.

I’ve had new cars since I was fifteen and only one didn’t make it to 100k and that was due to a wreck. Almost every vehicle with proper maintenance these days easily lasts 100k. I have had two different land rovers that people claim are unreliable as it gets and the only problem I had was the window regulators on both of them which I learned to fix myself for almost nothing

I expect the 2.7L engine to be more reliable than the 4 cylinder. I’m not convinced that a 4 cylinder with a 5000 pound SUV is a good idea. That engine will be strained.

I've voiced this concern a few times and have been shot down particularly in regards to the 4 door and 2.3.
