So I kept getting a service rear axel when trying to turn the locker on. So today pulled the cover and found both the power and ground somehow managed to get in front this metal flange. Wearing through the wire shielding, most likely causing it to short. De-pinned the plug cleaned up, soldered, heat shrink with glue inside. Tested and she works again.

is there any retainment / clips, or similar to secure the individual wires? I'm surprised it's not a cable (unless you had already removed the jacket to check the individuals)

Usually it is inside of a plastic sleeve - not much that would protect it if it got on the wrapped up though. There's a pin welded onto the locker coil, and that pin sits in a catch that keeps the coil from spinning on the carrier (and wrapping the wire up). That flange is part of the coil on the back side - I think it's to knock down oil spray from impinging on the plug penetration, but not entirely certain about that.

Good catch from the OP though.

Yes I removed the wire heat shrink when I saw it was damaged to expose both wires that were also damaged.

in brian's photo there's nothing retaining the cable, it is just the length if you will that is presumed to keep it away from contact with anything.

Excellent inspection point when changing the rear diff fluid.

To answer your question no. No clip they just float. I de-pinned the plug repaired the wires and tucked them were I felt they would be good depending on how much throw is in the locker when activated.

The locker housing itself doesnt move at all, engaged or otherwise — that pin holds it
in place.

There is a concentric coil inside it that pushes against a pressure plate along the spider gearing that locks the spiders in place. It’s only about 2mm of travel. You can’t see it when it’s all assembled; you can only hear the plate click into place against the gearing when it engages.

So the wire itself shouldn’t really move at all apart from the oil being flung around inside the housing
