I've been unable to close or lock my rear cargo door for a few days. I've done my best trying to identify the issue. When I close it feels secure until I lock the doors. It then pops open. This first happened when I started driving and the door almost swung open enough to hit a vehicle. Wait times for a service appointment are ridiculous. Throwing this out there to see if anyone has had experience with this issue. Hopefully it's something easy and I'm just dumb and missing something.

Wow, I'm happy I saw this. My tailgate refused to open back in early May. I would hear it unlock but pulling the handle did nothing. Dealer took a quick look and confirmed it needed a deeper dive. They didn't have an appointment available for a month and a half. I found a dealer half hour away and got an appointment for a week later.

Dropped off the truck for evaluation and Lyft home at my expense, then Lyft back to pick it up that same day.
Lyft back at my expense to the dealer to pick up the truck after it was fixed. Tailgate works but I'm out $200 from having to travel back and forth, AND I have an extended service plan with the higher level rental. Rental isn't offered unless it's a safety issue or the vehicle isn't drivewable. I would say having it open by itself when driving is a safety issue! I also think if you have a new vehicle with an issue like this you shouldn't need an appointment to get it fixed.

Good luck my friend.

You have any idea what they did to fix your tailgate?

My Badlands is currently at the dealership. They did say the are replacing the latch and are looking for any software issues. Since my rear cargo door pops open when I hit the lock button. Thanks for all the info.

What was resolution of this issue? Mine just started doing this, totally annoying.

My rear cargo door won’t latch and the handle won’t open either. The Ford dealership had nothing but “try to strap it closed and bring it in.” I’m I missing something I can do in the meantime?

Other than playing with the mechanism from the inside of the tailgate - I can’t think or anything
