  1. Comprehensive Roof Rack Comparison 5/2024

I’d like to add a couple data points…. I think the companies publishing static and dynamic load ratings are doing a disservice to themselves and their customers. I’m pretty sure if they are testing at all they are not trying to make their racks fail - they are using an ideal load and praying...
  2. Shouldn’t we just use the Aux switches to switch a lighting relay??

Yes - you are correct. Someone pointed that out and provided the correct link/ratings...
  3. Modified TrailRax For 2 Door Bronco

Wish I'd found this earlier! Nice work. I might still add sister plates just in case! :)

Looks sweet! But also looks like you could easily over load the claimed 300lb Trailrax limit. (which I broke with 200lbs of load on a washboard!)

I am hoping you have a build thread.

I found out about RCI too late. Dang. I thought Stellarbuilt would be more helpful in selecting gear for the bronco but they were useless - so I was searching on my own. When we got to Bozeman folks there recommended swapping to RCI but their lead time didn’t work with out timetable. Anyway the...

I would like to know more about your fuel mod! Once we got the solar working the battery stayed charged but we had plenty of sun. I think the 120 watt panel would keep the solar going with plenty of sun every day but I would probably double the panel output for days with less or lower sun.
  8. '24 Badlands/Sasquatch 2-Door Cross-Country Camper Build + Trip Review!

Yeah, it was not close to ā€œspiritedā€ and the load was inside the weight spec, so I don’t know what they were thinking. Their customer service was great once I called them but with something like this it was still too little, too late. I would absolutely choose a pickup with a topper. I love the...
  9. Shouldn’t we just use the Aux switches to switch a lighting relay??

So, from those wiring diagrams, it looks like the accessory switches are flipping relays… Here’s a little trick you want to get the current through a fused circuit… the automotive blade fuses have two small exposed terminals on top that let you measure the voltage drop across the fuse. You can...

Sidio crates What are you, Australian? Ha ha j/k I think a teardrop would be awesome I’m just not interested in towing a trailer where we like to go. I’m sure it can be done…. Just another level of chaos beyond my comfort zone.

We switched to outdoor down comforters like from Big Agnes or Nemo. Way comfy and versatile. Eh erm. That is a very good question and one I thought about a ton as well motored across the back country. I think we would have benefitted from slightly more spring preload, for sure. I bet we were...
  12. Shouldn’t we just use the Aux switches to switch a lighting relay??

But the switches do control a relay. Are you worried about the wire burning up? Optimal wire size is determined by current and length of run, but also the max ampacity of the wire. So for a super short run (the pigtail coming from the relay) the ampacity is the relevant limit. Splice to a...
  13. Shouldn’t we just use the Aux switches to switch a lighting relay??

The current limits for each switch are listed in the auxiliary manual I think it's 40A for two switches and 25A for the rest- the switches are fused and operate relays. If you're running equipment that draws less than those limits, you'd just be duplicating equipment that's already in there...
  14. '24 Badlands/Sasquatch 2-Door Cross-Country Camper Build + Trip Review!

A little trip info... We started in West Sonoma County July 5 and blasted up to Mazama in two days - camped half way. Broke the rack, but enjoyed a few days at our friend's place there. It is such a beautiful valley. Then back south to Joseph OR, bought some groceries, and headed east. Camped...
  15. '24 Badlands/Sasquatch 2-Door Cross-Country Camper Build + Trip Review!

Yes they should, and $159 is silly. There was no way I was going to drive with it busted. We were fortunate to be at a friend's house when it cracked so we went to the hardware store, got some galvanized angle, and just made splints. It actually worked great.
  16. '24 Badlands/Sasquatch 2-Door Cross-Country Camper Build + Trip Review!

Bad! Until I spent a couple hours taping over various slots and holes till I figured out the main source: the gap between the rack and the tent. I temporarily duct-taped that shut and then when we got to Maine I got some closed cell foam and made a spacer. It's still louder than stock, but not...
  17. '24 Badlands/Sasquatch 2-Door Cross-Country Camper Build + Trip Review!

It’s under their dynamic limit. I think 180lbs? I worked it out a ways back but don’t remember. It sheared here, both sides. Nothing was holding the front of the rack on 😬

This is kind of a ridiculous thing to do to a 2-door, but we did it anyway. My brother-in-law bought this and wanted to outfit it for camping. Not far in the conversation, he asked if he could ship it to me and I'd do it, then drive it back across the US. Felt like a no-brainer. My wife and I...
