Loved my 81 Bronco and drove it for 6 years. It was manual with "overdrive" which was just a high ratio and was a light-weight car transmission. Or so my mechanic said when he replaced it. Replaced it with a pickup transmission with a converter kit.
This sounds like a regulation dreamed up by someone working in an office about a hypothetical problem. They didn't cite any actual incidents that had occurred.
Thanks to everyone for the responses. It's pretty evident the Wrangler is a dog in comparison to the Bronco. I might have figured as much since I drove an 81 Bronco for 6 years in Oklahoma, which is pretty breezy as you might know, and it did ok at least by the standards of the day.
