Yikes. It looks like an integrated wiring cover could have been made that goes below the hood line.

It's not a big enough deal for me to take it to the dealership over. Whenever I have a real reason to go, I'll have them take a look.

Was the wiring part actually hard, and if so what was the issue?

I have already deleted everything and started from scratch multiple times.

For clarity's sake, when I start Carplay I see this screen. Clicking on the Carplay icon gives me this. Clicking on Yes, never enables wireless app projection and Carplay never starts. If I go into the Connectivity menu, The slider is greyed out for wireless app projection.

I have the bluetooth working. I can make calls and play audio. When I go into Apps and try to start Carplay it says that wireless app projection is off and asks me to turn it on. When I do, nothing happens. If I connect my phone through USB, Carplay works fine.

Fortunately I have not had to replace the windshield in the 350 miles my Bronco has thus far. I'd like to keep it that way.
