I almost went down the same path but conceded and gave up a little room for a tailgate box. The results were a ton of bass with the hardtop on and just enough with the top off. I’m glad my stereo shop pushed me to go big.
I picked up a Broncover last summer and it worked great. Getting it on and off quickly takes a little practice but it is well worth it. I'm sure it's not the cheapest option but it is made well. It does have a pole in the middle to keep water collecting in the center.
I changed out the kicks and put the OEM right back in. I even sealed and put sound deadening in the space but still no bass. To be fair I did use a two way. Maybe a mid bass wound be better. I ended up adding a sub and then put the new speakers in and it sounds great.
